The Relationship Between Fashion and Lifestyle - 1723 Words

The relationship Between Fashion and Lifestyle To begin with, I shall look at what fashion is; it is a currently popular style or practice involving clothing, footwear or accessories. It mostly refers to the current trends in looks and dressing style of a person (Cumming 234). In most cases, fashion is confusedly related to costumes; when a person talks of fashion they are seen to mean fashion in terms of textile. Fashion is seen to originate from the Western world and it is copied by other places. In this paper, we shall look at how fashion affects lifestyles and the group of people who are affected most. The paper further investigates how media is used to transmit fashion from one region to the other. Although it has been seen to affect†¦show more content†¦Presently, modern Westerners have a wide range of fashions to choose from, it is currently believed that what a person chooses to wear has a lot to tell about their personality. Most of the fashions have been introduced by people who have cultural or social status s uch as musicians, leaders and to some extent beauty pageants. Although fashion is universal, everybody has his or her own tastes. Fashion is mostly dictated by a person’s age, social class, generation, occupation, geographical location and time (Brook 53). In the case of age, it is very ridiculous to find an old person dressed in the fashion of young people. People who follow fashion blindly are referred to as â€Å"fashion victims.† Aisha Shajid asserts that youths are the most affected by fashion; she terms them as slaves to fashion (1). She points out that fashion does not only involve clothing but also language, dancing and music. In addition, she argues that at the teenage age the most important thing is to look fashionable and beautiful. Teenagers are the most active because at this time, one is facing identity crisis as they try to cultivate a sophisticated image. Essay on Adult Crime Adult Time - 934 Words

06 August 2013 Juvenile Crime In â€Å"Adult Crimes, Adult Time,† published in the Washington Post on March 29, 1998, Linda J. Collier argues about the juvenile laws and her principal argument shows that children should serve the same time as adults when they commit adult crimes. Collier provides some statistics and examples (Jonesboro shooting, Daily City shooting, and her experience with a particular girl) that support her position regarding the information of the article. The diversity of laws among states made the situation much harder because they cannot come up with a specific solution for the problem. According to Collier, the solution is to create the same set of rules for every state, in order to punish the juvenile who commits adult†¦show more content†¦For example, the number of murders done by juveniles in 2003 was 783, however statistics show that the number of murders done by juveniles reached over 1.100 by 2007. In her argument, Collier never gives a clear and evident example of how only extending and implying harsher and more severe consequences will help reduce juvenile crime rates. For instance, there is no reliable measure of improvement that shows that Collier’s solution will decreased the rate of juvenile crimes. Logically, a more severe punishment will indeed frighten and make a juvenile think twice before committing a crime, although it wont guarantee a complete solution for the problem. In the sense of ethos, Collier’s essay comes off as a cold and dry argument due to her strict point of view exhibiting any sort of emotion or sympathy towards the juvenile’s perspective. It is important to keep in mind that kids will be kids regardless of the matter, therefore people tend to forget that they are still in the process of growing up and becoming responsible adults. On behalf of that, kids are vulnerable to make mistakes and careless choices without thinking about the consequences. Collier flat out just wants to extend and intensify the judicial punishment, without any concerns regarding the juvenile’s background, family situation, or any other important factor that relates or leads to a juvenile misbehavior in theShow MoreRelatedJuveniles Treated Like Adults Essays1330 Words   |  6 PagesEveryday a vast number of brutal crimes occur somewhere in America. Resolved Individuals Have a Moral Obligation free essay sample

Helping people is undoubtedly an honorable thing to do in some instances; however, by no means is it morally obligated all the time. Therefore, I negate the resolution â€Å"Resolved: Individuals have a moral obligation to assist people in need. † Individual (The New Oxford American Dictionary, Oxford University Press, 2001): A single human being as distinct from a group, class, or family Moral Obligation (Black’s Law Dictionary): a duty that is based only on one’s conscience and that is not legally enforceable Assist (Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary): to give usually supplementary support or aid to People in Need (New Oxford American Dictionary): those in the state of lacking basic necessities such as food or money or requiring help or support I accept my opponent’s definitions. The negative burden is only to prove that the moral obligation does not exist as a principle. By no means does this impair individuals from engaging in this honorable behavior in certain instances when it is required, it simply means that this action is not morally obligated as a general universal principle. We will write a custom essay sample on Resolved: Individuals Have a Moral Obligation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page My Value is that of the Preservation of Society. Political philosopher John Locke writes in Chapter Eleven of his Two Treatises of Government that quote the first and fundamental natural law is the preservation of society and of every person in it. Natural law is one of the fundamental principles of Lockes philosophy. It overrides all other values because natural laws come before all other values. The negative will show that a moral obligation to assist those in need does not exist as it impairs the preservation of society and that instead the it is societys duty to ensure this natural law is fulfilled. My Criterion is John Lockes Social Contract. The Social Contract is a hypothetical agreement between individuals to form a society. They form into a society in order to preserve their property and ensure that the society as a whole has their natural rights enlarged and secured. The contract is formed to preserve society and therefore it becomes societys duty to preserve itself. The negative will demonstrate that the moral obligation that used to exist in the state of nature no longer exists as a universal principle when individuals from a society. The sole negative Contention is that the moral obligation is instead a contractual obligation. There will be two subpoints under this contention. Subpoint A: Governments are contractually obligated to assist those in need. Locke writes in Section 229 that quote the end of government is the good of mankind end quote. Alex Tuckness of Iowa State University writes that the quote government is limited to fulfilling the purposes of natural law, but these include positive goals as well as negative rights end quote. The purpose of government and society in general is to ensure that the natural law, or the preservation of society, is fulfilled. People give the government the authority to act as their will and preserve all of society. Subpoint B: People are contractually obligated to assist those in need.

The American Dream Dead or Alive free essay sample

â€Å"The American Dream says that anything can happen if you work hard enough at it and are persistent, and have some ability. The sky is the limit to what you can build, and what can happen to you and your family†, said Sanford Weill. The tradition of the American Dream has always been based on the way people live out their lives. Although, throughout these past years some believe that the American Dream has died off. Many blame themselves for their own failure, and others blame the economy and government. The American Dream is dead because of college debt, the economy, and the individual liberty of everyday citizens. In dealing with the American Dream, most students have been known as the ones struggling the most. This year, and for the past couple of years, college debt has been a big struggle for students trying to achieve their own American Dream. The unprecedented levels of student debt have conspired to shatter the traditional American Dream. We will write a custom essay sample on The American Dream: Dead or Alive? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Since the student debt is rising it leads to parents ability to pay without restoring the debt is slowly reclining. Michelle, who is a freshman in college, is concerned about the financial burden her education is placing on her and her family (Wallechinsky, 2). As opposed to many other things the cost of college degree has grown three times the rate of inflation since the late 1970s. You can tell that the American Dream is dead to them because of the struggle that is being out upon them. Although some blame others for their non-achievements, many people take full responsibility and blame themselves for not making it the way they had planned to. Individual economic success begins with self-seeking motives. That all ended with benefiting society- in order to create the American Dream (Herald, 1). Students and families put themselves into deeper situations by doing bigger things than they can actually handle. Some of the middle classed people take full responsibility for their financial success and even failure (Wallechinsky, 2). If you cant focus and do the things that you want to achieve in life, why waste your time to blame others for what you didnt do to help yourself. The blame cannot always be tossed upon other individuals. Many of these individuals are responsible for their own character and preparation (Jilson, 1). Achieving the American Dream that you think is dead isnt that hard, but if you choose not to help yourself for something you strive for, you might as well say good-bye to your own dream. In this case there is no on to really blame but yourself in such situations. Besides other strong problems that concern people not achieving their American Dream, economic values and problems have also been a big impact on the argument of the American Dream being dead. Ever since the recession, the employment among people who did not attend college has been flat (Francis, 1). So, this leading to the fact of people who had lost their jobs cant seem to find new ones, and the everyday economy is making it harder and harder for them. The economy is starting to get worse and worse leading to skilled workers losing their jobs over small things, sometimes for the worst reasons, for example, age. Companies terminated hard workers at a certain age, even with perfect attendance, and no performance problems what so ever. According to the excerpt on if the American Dream is still possible, David Wallechinsky point out that the savings rate for Americans is the lowest it has ever been in these past 73 years. This problems is because most people are saying that there is not much left to save after they have paid all of their bills. â€Å"The American Dream changes based on where you are in life† (McLaughlin, 1). The economy has killed almost everyones views and goals in achieving the American Dream. Is it possible that the economy should be the blame of most Americans not reaching the goals that they desired in the beginning? The American Dream is known to be dead because of the college debt that most students are stuck in, individual liberty of citizens, and the economy that we have becomes stuck in. â€Å"The American Dream is a constant reminder that Americas true nature and distinctive grandeur is in promising the common man, the man on the make, a better chance to succeed her than common men enjoy anywhere else on earth†, said Cal Jilson in an excerpt from his book Pursuing the American Dream. In achieving the American Dream, people struggle with reaching goals because of student debt/loans, struggles within their own messed up economy, and also dealing with the fact that theyre not successful because it is their very own fault. Some may argue that the dream is alive because of the hard working citizens that are still out there. But in fact, with providing good evidence and support the dream has died.
